Initial Ideas for My School Watch- ETA 6498 Base Calibre

Long before the days of practicing for and completing examinations, I was already thinking about what I might do with the school watch we get to make. We will be using the ETA Unitas 6498 as the base, we receive the movement in kit form and each component has to be either made, finished or fitted by ourselves.

Here are a few of my initial ideas…

I really liked the idea of producing a skeletonised watch with an open dial, so my initial drawings and research headed in this direction. A few weeks later however, after getting the chance to see some pictures of previous students watches and the WEMPE movement that the school received, I decided to head in the opposite direction.

They soon evolved into these…

My plan is to produce a traditional three quarter plate movement with chatons and possibly a decorated balance cock. It will be finished in a similar style to the movements being produced by many of the German watch houses. I also plan to make my own dial and add a complication to the movement. Everything should hopefully be finished by July 2013 at the latest.

Anyway, I’ll try not to give too much away for now, but I will keep everyone updated along the way. So watch this space!
